A production manager, for example, must know the type of raw materials to be used, the proportion, the production process and the manner of handling various machines.  A finance manager must have thorough knowledge of working capital management, cost of capital, ratios, fund flow and cash flow analysis and so on.

The manager will be able to guide his subordinates well only if he is technically competent in his line of work.

Knowledge of Human Relations: 

The manager must be capable of understanding human relations. Only then he will be able to motivate his subordinates to work harder. Employees cannot be handled in the manner machines are handled. An employee is disturbed not only by the happenings in the work place but also by what happens in his personal life. The manager must, therefore, understand human psychology to be successful. He should not be harsh in his approach. If the work related problems of an employee are genuine, the manager must help him to find a remedy. In the work place, the employees work as a group or team. The behavior of an individual will be different when he is part of a group.
