Skills Expected of a Manager

Management is the art of getting things done by others. The manager will be able to get things done by his subordinates only if he possesses the following skills:

Technical Knowledge and Skill:

The manager must have technical skill for the efficient performance of his work. He must have complete knowledge of the technical aspects of work. A production manager, for example, must know the type of raw materials to be used, the proportion, the production process and the manner of handling various machines.  A finance manager must have thorough knowledge of working capital management, cost of capital, ratios, fund flow and cash flow analysis and so on.

The manager will be able to guide his subordinates well only if he is technically competent in his line of work.

Knowledge of Human Relations:

The manager must be capable of understanding human relations. Only then he will be able to motivate his subordinates to work harder. Employees cannot be handled in the manner machines are handled. An employee is disturbed not only by the happenings in the work place but also by what happens in his personal life. The manager must, therefore, understand human psychology to be successful. He should not be harsh in his approach. If the work related problems of an employee are genuine, the manager must help him to find a remedy. Counseling is recommended to enable the employees to get rid of their personal problems.

In the work place, the employees work as a group or team. The behavior of an individual will be different when he is part of a group. For example, an individual worker may not strike work but if he is induced by trade union, he may participate in a strike program organized to safeguard the interests of the workers in general.

Workers need to be constantly motivated to perform better. Motivation need not be necessarily be in form of monetary rewards. Non-monetary methods like participation in decision- making, greater authority or even a word of appreciation will certainly motivate workers.

To be able to get things done by subordinates, the manager must be good in understanding the human behavior.

Imaginative Skill:

Only a manager who is blessed with imaginative skill will be able to conceive creative ideas. Management is dynamic in nature. Age-old and conventional practices need to be replaced by modern ideas. In case of accounting, for example, most concerns these days use such software as the ‘Tally” in place of conventional accounting system. Letter correspondence is now considered outdated. Business clients are being advised through Internet and Cell phones.

The imaginative skill of the manager will enable him to come out with innovative ideas. Such innovative ideas will help to bring out new product, to explore a new market and so on.
